An easy yet delicious recipe for shepherd’s pie, a classic British dish of minced lamb in gravy topped with mashed potatoes.

Ingredients for Shepherd’s Pie

  • 800g minced lamb

  • 1.5 kg potatoes

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 1 carrot, peeled and finely diced

  • 200g mushrooms, chopped

  • 25g butter

  • 50 ml of milk

  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 4 tbsp gravy granules

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions for Making Shepherd’s Pie

  • Peel and chop the potatoes into large chunks, then put them in a large saucepan filled with water.
  • Season the potatoes with a little salt, then put the saucepan on high heat on the hob for 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
  • Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180C/ gas mark 4 and heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat.
  • Add the minced lamb to the pan and cook for 5-7 minutes, until the meat begins to brown. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and make sure all the meat is browned.
  • Add the chopped onions, carrots and mushrooms to the frying pan and cook for a further five minutes.
  • Season the meat, onions, and mushrooms with salt and pepper.
  • Pour enough boiling water over the meat to just cover it, then stir in the gravy granules and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for ten minutes on reduced heat.
  • While the meat cooks in the gravy, drain the potatoes and return them to the pan.
  • Put the saucepan on the hob over low heat. Add the milk and butter and season with pepper.
  • Mash the potatoes thoroughly, so there are no lumps. Using a fork to whisk the potatoes after mashing can help eliminate any remaining lumps.
  • Tip the minced lamb and gravy mixture into a large ovenproof dish.
  • Use a spoon to add the mashed potatoes to the top of the minced lamb. Alternatively, use a piping bag to create a patterned topping.
  • If you have spooned the mashed potatoes on, smooth them out with the back of a spoon, then run a fork along the top to create a pattern. This will help some parts to crisp a little in the oven.
  • Transfer to the oven and cook for 15 minutes, until the top begins to brown and the gravy rises up the sides of the dish.
  • Serve the shepherd’s pie with either seasonal vegetables or peas and pickles.

Additional Tips for Making Shepherd’s Pie

  • Add extra flavour by adding herbs to the mix or a grating of cheese over the mashed potatoes.
  • Try adding a handful or two of frozen peas to add a different flavour. Pea and lamb is a classic combination.
  • Serve this dish with your favourite vegetables and red cabbage or pickled onions.

What’s the Difference Between Cottage Pie and Shepherd’s Pie?

Shepherd’s pie and cottage pie are often confused, and while they share a similar look — a savoury meat filling with a topping of mashed potatoes — the key difference lies in the type of meat used.

Cottage Pie Uses Beef

Cottage pie is traditionally made with minced beef. The name dates back to the 1700s, when potatoes became a staple food for families living in rural cottages. Beef was the most common meat available, so it naturally became the base of the dish.

Common ingredients include:

  • Minced beef
  • Onions, carrots, peas
  • A rich beef gravy
  • Mashed potato topping

It’s hearty, comforting, and has a deeper, more robust flavour.

Shepherd’s Pie Uses Lamb

Shepherd’s pie, on the other hand, is made with minced lamb. The name is a nod to shepherds who tend sheep.

Typical ingredients include:

  • Minced lamb
  • Root vegetables
  • Lamb stock
  • Herbs like rosemary
  • Mashed potato topping

Lamb gives the dish a slightly sweeter, more delicate taste.

Everything Else Is Largely the Same

Aside from the meat, the two pies are almost identical:

  • Both use a savoury meat‑and‑vegetable base
  • Both have a topping of mashed potatoes
  • Both are baked until golden and bubbling

The variations you see — cheese on top, Worcestershire sauce, red wine, or different vegetables — come down to family tradition rather than the name of the dish.

In the UK, the Distinction Matters

Although people in other countries often confuse the terms, in the UK the difference is clear‑cut:
Beef = Cottage Pie. Lamb = Shepherd’s Pie.
Calling a beef version “shepherd’s pie” is considered incorrect.

Modern Takes

You’ll also find:

  • Vegetarian or vegan versions
  • Sweet potato mash toppings
  • Guinness‑enriched beef fillings
  • Lamb pies with mint or rosemary
